The Ultra Project | Intro
One year ago, I couldn't run past three lampposts.
Not three miles. Not three kilometres. Three lampposts.
I remember the burning lungs, the heavy legs, and the little voice in my head asking, "What on earth are you doing?"
At the time, I didn't realise I was taking the first steps on a journey that would change far more than my fitness.
"The biggest distance I've travelled wasn't on the trail. It was the distance between 'I can't' and 'what if I can?'"
It wasn't pretty. It wasn't inspiring. It certainly didn't look like the beginning of an ultra-running journey.
But it was a beginning.
The Ultra Project is the story of what happens when an ordinary bloke decides to stop making excuses and start finding out what's possible.
This isn't a blog about elite athletes, podium finishes, or perfect training plans. It's about showing up when motivation disappears. It's about getting out of the door when the weather is awful, the legs are tired, and the sofa is calling your name.
"You don't become an ultra runner in a day. You become one run at a time."
Over the coming months, I'll be sharing the reality of that journey:
Weekly training updates
Weight loss and fitness progress
Lessons learned on the trails
Race reports and event experiences
Honest kit reviews
The setbacks, doubts, wins, and breakthroughs that happen along the way
And maybe a few recipes to keep you going
Some weeks will be successful. Others won't.
There will be missed targets, difficult runs, muddy trails, aching legs, and moments when I question why I've signed up for another challenge. But every experience has something to teach.
Because this project isn't really about running.
It's about resilience.
It's about discipline.
It's about discovering what's possible when you stop negotiating with discomfort and start committing to progress.
"Three lampposts became a mile. A mile became a habit. A habit became a marathon. Now it's time to see how far the journey can really go."
So welcome to The Ultra Project.
This is the story of how I went from three lampposts to ultra distances, and I'm only just getting started.
I'll be aiming to post here once a week. Think of it as a running diary from an ordinary bloke trying to lose a bit of weight, get a bit fitter, and see just how far he can push himself. Some weeks will be better than others, but I'll share them all the same.
